C011 chip and quiet data on input.

In the data sheet it says: "New data should not be put into
I0-I7 until IAck is returned low."

If I (say) scan a keyboard matrix, what happens if I don't
put in buffers? Will I just loose the data, and then read
it correctly on the next read, or will the C011 go into some
kind of metastable state, never to return to senses?

As you may guess, I can afford to loose data to save a buffer.

I'll be very glad to receive info about this. (Can't find
anything in the books).
