Yep. I did a superset of this when at Transtech, by writing a
network-transparent link accessing library for Genysys, the
variant of Trollius that was then sold by them.

You might like to ask them about it - I don't know what happened
to the work after I left (I think info@transtech.co.uk or
info@transtech.com should reach them).

If you want more details, please send me mail. Note that this was 
work owned by Transtech, so I can only give advice, really.
