there is a pub.domain pc-bridge program, that makes a bridge out of
a pc + 2 ethernet cards. I added code to one of these to make
it also serve as ethernet<->link convertor.  [but most would
probably just buy two pc's these days ?]

more details on request  [uses raw ethernet rather than tcp/ip]
