I think it would be easier to attach the transputersystem through one of the serial ports of the SGI, there are cheap readytogo link-rs232/rs422 cards availlable.

I also think that writing the iserver for a serial-line is much easier than for a then unusual handled parallel port.

you can even build a link-rs232 converter on your own for a couple of bucks, you only need a standalone UART-Chip (like the 80C17) and a simple parallel-link converter (C011/12) and a rs232leveldriver.
