		POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
		-----------------------------------

		Department of Computing
		Manchester Metropolitan
		University Manchester
		M1 5GD United Kingdom

The Department of Computing at the Manchester Metropolitan University
is offering the opportunity for recent graduates of proven academic
ability to undertake research towards a higher degree commencing
October 1994.

Two Research Studentships are available. These comprise a grant of 5775
pounds per year, with the possibility of some additional paid lecturing
duties. Both posts are initially for one year, extendible to three
years. Appropriate fees for registration and supervision for a higher
degree will be met by the University. The successful applicants will be
expected to undertake research within the Department of Computing and
register for a MPhil/PhD in one of the areas outlined below.

  * Software Engineering for Parallel Systems

  * Development of Real-time, Fault-tolerant and Hybrid Systems

  *  Distributed Artificial Intelligence

  *  Object-Based Systems

  * Programming Language Design and Implementation

  *  Formal Specification and Verification

  *  Temporal and Modal Logics

In addition, an opportunity exists to undertake an MPhil/PhD whilst
being employed as a part-time lecturer within the Department.
Enquiries regarding this should be directed to Michael Fisher (details
below).

Background
----------

Manchester Metropolitan University was formed in
1970, and is now the UK's largest individual university, with some
twenty-one thousand full-time students (London University is
technically bigger, but actually consists of a number of quite separate
colleges!) The university is located on a number of sites in and
around Manchester, an industrial city in the north of England with a
population of approximately two and a half million people. The city has
excellent communication links, including a large international airport
(about fifteen minutes from the city centre by car), and an efficient
public transport system (London is two and a half hours away by
train). Culturally and economically, Manchester is England's second
city.

The Department of Computing is located in the University's city center
campus, and currently has thirty academic staff, with a number of
researchers. The department is currently in a stage of rapid expansion,
and staff numbers are expected to grow significantly over the next
decade. The research interests of the department include DAI and
mainstream AI, temporal, modal and other non-classical logics and their
applications, real-time and parallel systems, neural nets, HCI, CAL,
object-oriented systems, EDI, multi-media, text-processing, natural
language understanding, and hypertext applications. The successful
candidates will join one of these research groups.
