Sorry about posting on the net, but I sent email and it bounced. 

I would be interested in what you find out, since I may have a similar need 
in the near future. So please post a summary or email it to me.

The only suggestion I can offer is that you consider having a vendor modify
their 6U board to become a 3U board.  We did something similar with
Transtech (a 6U non-VME board to a 3U version).  The key is that we bought
enough of the new boards to make it worth their trouble, aided somewhat by
the fact that the resulting design was a
worthwhile addition to their product line.  I don't know what your
anticipated quantity is, but the 3U design should be marketable.
