An Introduction to MPI with Fortran
		13th December 1995

The Message Passing Interface (MPI) is a recently developed
standard for message-passing library calls that allows a collection
of processes to communicate (for example to solve large problems on
a high-performance parallel machine). It has involved a major collaboration
of machine vendors, universities, industry and government laboratories
and implementations on many machines are now starting to come on line.

This one-day course provides an introduction to the principles
behind MPI and a description of MPI's interface for Fortran programmers.
The course closes with MPI program demonstrations and a simple
MPI exercise.

The course will be run by the University of Greenwich, under the auspices
of the London & South-East centre for High Performance Computing (SEL-HPC).
SEL-HPC is a JISC funded consortium comprised of the London Parallel
Applications Centre, the University of Greenwich, the University of Kent &
the University of London Computer Centre, formed in response to the new
technologies initiative in HPC. Further information about its activities
can be found at
	"http://www.lpac.ac.uk/SEL-HPC/"

Who should attend this course?

The course is aimed at computational scientists, engineers and
mathematicians with programming experience in Fortran who

    - wish to learn about message-passing and MPI

    - are interested in solving computationally-intensive applications
on clusters of workstations and/or supercomputers

It is also aimed at lecturers and teaching staff who wish to introduce
the principles of message passing and specifically MPI into their own
courses. It is provided primarily for members of HEIs in London and the
South East, although members of HEIs in other parts of the UK are welcome
to attend.

What will I gain from this course?

The course will provide you with:

    - an understanding of the key concepts of message passing

    - basic knowledge on how to develop and run simple
	MPI Fortran programs

    - a few pointers on how MPI might be useful to solving
	your large-scale scientific applications

What material does this course cover?

    - Introduction to HPC/Message Passing

    - Introduction to MPI

    - Basic MPI Fortran calls

    - Collective & Nonblocking communication

    - Running MPI / a simple example

    - MPI exercise in F77
