Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre's Summer Scholarship |
Programme is an opportunity for undergraduate students of any |
subject, with programming experience, to spend ten weeks working |
on high performance parallel computer systems. Since its | E
inception in 1987, the Programme has given experience of parallel |
computing to well over 100 senior undergraduate and a number of |
graduate students from around the world. | D
                                                                  |

                                                                  |
The University of Edinburgh's involvement with parallel computing |
began in 1980, when physicists in Edinburgh began to use the ICL | N
DAP at Queen Mary College in London to run molecular dynamics and |
high energy physics simulations. Their pioneering results and |
wider interest within the University enabled Edinburgh to rapidly | B
acquire two of these machines for its own use, and researchers |
soon achieved widespread recognition across a range of |
disciplines, Over the next few years, this work expanded and led | U
to the establishment of the Edinburgh Concurrent Supercomputer |
Project in 1987, based on the Meiko Computing Surface. |
                                                                  | R
In 1990, this project evolved into Edinburgh Parallel Computing |
Centre --- EPCC --- to act as a focus for the many strands of |
high performance computing research and applications activities | G
within the University. EPCC's mission is to accelerate the |
effective exploitation of high performance computing systems |
throughout academia, industry and commerce. The Centre's 50+ | H
full-time staff work to achieve this goal through a range of |
activities spanning undergraduate and advanced training |
programmes, service provivion, industrial affiliation and |
contract work, and participation in European and UK government |
funded collaborations. |
                                                                  | P
EPCC houses an exceptional range of high performance computers |

A SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP AT EDINBURGH PARALLEL COMPUTING CENTRE |
                                                                  |
After an introductory training course, each student works on a |
specific project, related to their field of study. Working with |
EPCC staff and an expert in the project's application domain, |
students gain hands-on experience of tackling real problems with | C
high performance parallel computers. Students present their work |
through a seminar presentation, a written report and a poster |
displayed at the Centre's Annual Seminar at the end of the | O
summer. |

In 1995, 15 students, from the U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Germany, | M
Denmark, Netherlands, Portugal, Hungary and Greece used the |
Centre's powerful computing resources to investigate problems as |
diverse as the real-time visualisation of robots wandering the | P
surface of a moon, fast searching of ancient Greek literature and |
speedy simulation of rock under stress. |
                                                                  | U
During their stay, students are supported by grants from EPCC. |

THE SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME IN 1996 |
                                                                  |
EPCC will be offering 15 scholarships in 1996. These 10-week | I
scholarships, each worth 140 pounds per week (*), are open to |
talented students in any discipline who have completed at least |
two years of undergraduate study, and who have some programming | N
experience. Knowledge of C or Fortran would be an advantage, but |
programming experience and a willingness to learn may be |
sufficient. A small number of places may be available to | G
applicants graduating in 1996, or pursuing graduate studies. |
                                                                  |
The Programme will begin in Edinburgh on Monday 1st July 1996, |
and will run for 10 weeks. |

(*) EPCC pays students 140 pounds per week. This is intended to |
cover the cost of food, accomodation, travel while in |
Edinburgh, entertainment, etc. Where students are coming |
from outside the UK, we will endeavour to arrange |
accomodation, at a cost of around 55 pounds per week. It is |
up to students to meet the cost of getting to and from |
    Edinburgh. |
