September 11th - 3D Computing - Multiprocessing in the Mainstream

3D Graphics/Animation and Interactive Virtual Reality Q they're
compute intensive and usually require real time performance; this
translates into an insatiable demand for performance which makes
PARALLEL Processing clearly the technology of choice. Dr. Frank Crow
of Interval Research conducted the very excellent Graphics
tutorial at Hot Chips '95 and has agreed to make a similar presentation
to us on September 11th - modified to emphasize parallel processing
issues. Frank will cover Scan Conversion, the 3D Pipeline, Lighting
and Shading, Texture, and Ray Tracing. He'll talk about example
Graphics architectures and conjecture on what's next.

Dr. Crow previously held distinguished positions at Xerox PARC and
Apple Computer.

PPC is paricularly interested in whether tightly coupled shared memory
architectures such as can be implemented with Scalable Coherent
Interface (SCI) can lead to the use of higher performance algorithms
than those that are traditionally used; Frank is eager to discuss the issue
with us.

The main meeting starts promptly at 7:30PM and a discussion of
member projects currently underway and other issues of interest to
entrepreneurs follows immediately thereafter at 9PM at Sun
Microsystems at 901 San Antonio Road in Palo Alto. This is just off the
southbound San Antonio exit of 101. Northbound travelers also exit at
San Antonio and take the overpass to the other side of 101.

Please be prompt; as usual, we expect a large attendance; don't be left
out or left standing. There is a $10 fee for non-members and members
will be admitted free. Yearly membership fee is $50.
