Announcement:

With this letter, we would like to draw your attention to the parallel
programming contest for students that will be held as a part of the
HPCN Eurosim Conference on Challenges in Telecomp and Telecom: parallel
simulation of complex systems and large-scale applications in Delft, The
Netherlands, 10-12 June, 1996.

Below you will find the announcement of the contest. We would like
to ask you to bring this announcement to the attention of anyone who might
be interested, be it in your own group or elsewhere.

Furthermore, be aware that it is still possible to submit abstracts
to the conference, even though the deadline has formally passed.

Latest information about the conference and the contest will be made
available through the web-page at URL
    http://dutita0.twi.tudelft.nl/PA/Conf96/eurosim.html

We hope to meet you at the conference next year.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Ir. L. Dekker
Conference Chairman

                   THE PARALLEL COMPUTING CONTEST

Parallel computing courses are now given in a large number of universities.
During the undergraduate and graduate studies, many students are using
high performance computers to solve large scale and complex problems
arising from various scientific and engineering fields, such as CFD,
Computational Mechanics, drug design, multi-media, VLSI device simulation,
optimisation and visualisation, etc.

To encourage the use of High Performance Computing by students,
a parallel computing contest will be organised as part of the HPCN
Eurosim conference which will be held in Delft, The Netherlands,
June 10-12, 1996. Every individual or a team of undergraduate and
graduate students (excl. Ph.D. students) can participate in the
competition with a parallel program in any of the following fields:

-> ecological models
-> fluid dynamics/turbulence
-> structural analysis
-> chemical dynamics
-> complex systems simulation
-> optimisation

Each participant/team is requested to submit a brief report (at least 4 pages
but not more than 8 pages) about the parallel program. The report should
include a description of the problem, the parallel algorithm or method, the
parallel implementation, the measured speedup and efficiency, and last but
not least an analysis on the scalability of the parallel implementation
towards an increasing number of processors and portability to different
architectures.

The submissions will be judged by a jury consisting of members of the
conference organising committee and representatives from major parallel
computer vendors. The selection procedure is as follows. First, a number
of awardable submissions will be selected from all submissions.
Awardable candidates will then be asked to submit their parallel programs for
evaluation on a parallel computer. Finally, the best among these awardable
candidates will become the winner of the contest.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
___________________

Novelty -- What is the originality of the idea and method in the
                parallel implementation.
Performance -- What is the efficiency and speedup of the parallel
                implementation. (both speedup w.r.t. the implemented parallel
                algorithm itself and the best known sequential algorithm
                are considered).
Scalability/ -- How well does the performance of the parallel program scale
Portability up when the number of processors increases, and is the chosen
                parallel method portable to different machine architectures.

The work of the best 4 selected awardable candidates will be summarised
in the conference proceedings.

The contest winner will be invited to attend the conference as a VIP; all
expenses concerning travelling, hotel accommodation and conference registra-
tion will be on the account of the conference organisation. A cheque of
dfl. 500,- will also be presented to the winner.
