Apologies if you receive this message more than once.

The workshop, details of which follow, has been organised by SEL-HPC (the
London and South-East centre for High Performance Computing) as part of its
HPC Training and Education activities funded by the Joint Information
Systems Committee of the UK's Higher Education Funding Councils.

High Performance Computing for the Social Sciences
Workshop: Saturday 29th July, University of Essex

High performance computers offer at least an order of magnitude more power
than desktop personal computers and workstations. Although predominantly
used by physicists, chemists and engineers for large scale number
crunching, social scientists are increasingly applying High Performance
Computing to problems that are beyond the capabilities of conventional
computers.

This workshop will introduce HPC for the social sciences by looking at
applications in geography, economics and statistics. The overall theme of
the workshop will be empowerment of the social scientist by the HPC systems
and tools which enable the application of simulation, data-mining and
collation, and visualisation to the study of complex social processes.

The panel discussion at the close of the workshop will ask:
Will the social scientist be the primary user of HPC systems
in the 21st century - and if not, why not?

Speakers:
o Heather Liddell, Queen Mary & Westfield College:
Introductory Overview of High Performance Computing
o Jim Doran, University of Essex:
          Modelling (simulating) social processes
o Rex Bergstrom, University of Essex:
          Continuous time modelling
o Stan Openshaw, University of Leeds:
          Use of HPC in geography
o Robin Thompson, University of Essex:
          Financial portfolio management

The workshop is co-sponsored by the Institute for the Social Sciences at
the University of Essex and SEL-HPC: the London and South-East centre for
High Performance Computing. Representatives of the HPC centre will attend
the workshop to help potential new users by providing information on:

o training courses on the use of HPC systems, languages
       and visualisation tools
o initial access to the centre's HPC hardware resources
o seeking long-term access to equipment

Costs:
This workshop is free to members of all HEFC-funded UK Universities and
Colleges. There will be a modest charge made to others to cover local
administration and lunch / refreshments.

Venue:
University of Essex, Wivenhoe Park, Colchester, Essex

Programme:
The workshop will run from 9:30am (registration from 9:00am) to
