Following discussions with a number of colleagues (and in particular
Sergei Gorlatch) it seemed that the time was right to try to encourage
interaction between the many groups who are working in the areas
suggested by the keywords above.

As a result, a mailing list (which currently has 76 subscribers)
has recently been set up.

The new mailing list is intended to act as a focus for discussion,
dissemination of information and co-operation related to the
derivation, expression, analysis and implementation of parallel
programs and algorithms in which pre-defined, parameterized patterns
of parallel computation play a central role. Words and phrases which
have cropped up in this area in the past include skeletons, templates,
motifs, Bird-Meertens Formalism, second order functions, paradigms,
utilities and so on. Much work in data-parallelism is related.

No restrictions are intended on the theory-practice axis
(and indeed we hope to span its full range, facilitating interaction).
Thus, we include both formal and informal derivation of programs and
algorithms in this style, development of cost models, language design,
experience with implementations and case studies.

Similarly, no assumptions are made about the language model (functional,
imperative, etc) in which the work is cast.

At the very least we hope to be able to share and exchange opinions,
ideas and bibliographies. More ambitiously, we are considering the
possibility of a regular workshop in the area and other related actvities.

If you'd like to join the list, please send e-mail to mic@dcs.ed.ac.uk

Murray Cole.
