May 8th - Silicon Graphics Inc. - Affordable Supercomputing at the
Desktop (well almost affordable)

One year after the Supercomputer Systems Division of SGI was formed
in July, 1993, the company began shipping its POWER CHALLENGE
product line.

POWER CHALLENGE with its 64-bit architecture, IRIX operating
system, MIPS pro compilers, and visual parallel development
environment, coupled with a strong application focus, redefines the
computing resources available to users. Scientific and technical
computer users now have general-purpose, cost-effective, high-
performance hardware as an alternative to traditional, expensive
products.

PPC's long time friend, Horst Simon, will review the Power Challenge
architecture and then discuss future directions in high performance
computing. The Power Challenge Array (clusters?) will be introduced
and some recent applications success stories will be highlghted.

Most of us know of SGI's success in 3D graphics resulting from the
use of custom ASICS. We will certainly be interested in how else
POWER CHALLENGE achieves its high performance.

A discussion of member projects currently underway and other
issues of interest to entrepreneurs begins at 7:15PM and the main
meeting starts promptly at 7:45PM at Sun Microsystems at 901 San
Antonio Road in Palo Alto. This is just off the southbound San
Antonio exit of 101. Northbound travelers also exit at San Antonio
and take the overpass to the other side of 101.

Please be prompt; as usual, we expect a large attendance; don't be
left out or left standing. There is a $10 fee for non-members and
members will be admitted free.  Yearly membership fee is $50;
corporate membership fee is $400/year.
