There are a number of papers on this topic. One place to look is in the
proceedings of the PADS (Parallel and Distributed Simulation) 94 conference
(joint ACM and IEEE publication) where there are several papers. Phil Dickens,
David Nicol and I have a paper there, and an extended version can be accessed
on the WWW from Dave Nicol's home page (http://www.cs.wm.edu/nicol/nicol.html).
The paper is entitled:

Parallelized Direct Execution Simulation of Message-Passing Parallel Programs
   P. Dickens, P. Heidelberger, D. Nicol.
