I guess the definitive source for the definition of "Active Messages"
would be Dr. David Culler's work out at UC Berkeley. Several of his
groups papers are available from the Berkeley Web site
(www.cs.berkeley.edu i think).

Here's some references from one of my bibliographies:

\bibitem{culler}
T. von Eicken, D. Culler, S. Goldstein, K. Schauser, ``Active
Messages: a Mechanism for Integrated Communication and Computation'',
ACM SIGARCH ISCA 1992, pp. 256-266

\bibitem{now}
T. Anderson, D. Culler, D. Patterson, ``A Case for NOW ( Network of
Workstations)'' IEEE Micro 1995. (obtained from UCB WWW server)

\bibitem{amspec}
D. Culler, et al. , ``Generic Active Message Interface Specification'',
University of California, Berkeley, August 1994.

Hope this helps,
