	*** Scalable Input/Output Post-Doctoral Position ***
	****************************************************

We are looking for several energetic researchers to join our ongoing
projects in Scalable Input/Output Characterization. This ARPA-funded
project explores the input/output requirements of scalable parallel
applications (including scientific, embedded, WWW-server and data
intensive). It is a part of the Scalable Input/Output Initiative; a
coordinated broad-based attack on the scalable I/O problem. The
postdoctoral associate will have the opportunity to work with large
scale parallel systems (512 - 2048 processors) from several major
vendors (Intel, IBM, etc.), scalable application programmers, and
parallel systems vendors. Efforts will have a direct impact on I/O
technology for parallel systems through the dissemination of I/O
application data.

Research Activities involve:

	- working with application programmers to instrument codes and
	  and collect application-level I/O patterns
	- instrumenting operating systems (filesystem and device driver)
code to collect physical I/O patterns
	- collection, analysis, and correlation of application and physical
	  I/O patterns
	- exploration of technniques to imporve parallel I/O systems
performance (configuration, scheduling, data management, etc.)

Requirements: (desiderata)

	- experience with operating systems, filesystems, and
large software systems (Unix, OSF, ...)
	- programming experience: C, C++, etc.
	- experience with parallel computer systems and performance tools
	- an interest in building real systems
	- a willingness to work hard and learn about new things

Starting Date: June 1995

The position requires a PhD in Computer Science or related discipline,
and the duration of the position is negotiable. For more information,
contact Professors Daniel Reed (reed@cs.uiuc.edu) or Andrew A. Chien
(achien@cs.uiuc.edu) at the Department of Computer Science at the
University of Illinois (an equal opportunity employer).
