I'd suggest looking at work done at MIT on the J-machine, and at
CalTech on the Mosaic series of processors.  Both of these systems
supported fine-grained object parallel models.  There are also
projects in Japan (Yonezawa, Matsuoka, Ishikawa) and at Univ of
Illinois (my group), amongst others, to make fine-grained object-oriented
programming models go fast on more conventional parallel hardware...
