Version 1.0 of the Prospero Resource Manager is now available.

What is it?

The Prospero Resource Manager (PRM) enables users to run parallel or
sequential applications on a collection of workstations. Sequential
jobs may be offloaded to lightly loaded workstations while parallel
jobs can make use of the collection of processors to achieve speedups.
WWW users can obtain additional information about PRM from its home
page

The following paper about PRM

    B. Clifford Neuman and Santosh Rao, "The Prospero Resource
Manager: A Scalable Framework for Processor Allocation in
Distributed Systems", Concurrency: Practice and Experience, 6(4):
    339-355, June 1994.

is available as ftp://prospero.isi.edu/pub/papers/prm/prm-cpe.ps.Z.

PRM Features:

o Automatic processor allocation : End-user does not have to
identify the processors on which the job will run.

o Supports PVM 3.3 : PVM applications run on PRM without source
       code modifications.

o Interactive execution : tasks can request keyboard input, and
       print to the user's terminal.

o Remote file access : Components of an application can span
multiple administrative domains across wide area networks and
access files on the user's workstation.

o Sequential applications do not require recoding or relinking.

What's new in this release:

The following features have been added to PRM since the previous
release (Version 0.9, released in April 1994):

o Task migration support : tasks can be checkpointed and migrated
between nodes. Checkpointing support is provided by Condor
       version 4.1.3b.

o Application debugging support : tasks can be started under a
debugger. For parallel programs, each target task is controlled
       by a separate debugger process.

Supported Platforms:

Sun-3 and Sparc workstations (running SunOS 4.1.x) and HP 9000/7xx
workstations (HP-UX versions 8 and 9).

Availability:

Source distribution for PRM Version 1.0 is available as

	ftp://prospero.isi.edu/pub/prm/prm-1.0.tar.Z

Checkpointing extensions for task migration are available separately as

	ftp://prospero.isi.edu/pub/prm/ckpt_extn.tar.Z

If building PRM with task migration capabilities, retrieve this file
and unpack it in the same directory in which you unpacked the PRM
distribution.

Questions:

Questions concerning PRM should be directed to INFO-PROSPERO@ISI.EDU
and should specifically mention the Prospero Resource Manager.
