              Research Position in Distributed Systems
              ========================================

The Shoshin research project in the Department of Computer Science at
the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada is seeking a postdoctoral
research associate in the area of Distributed Systems. The research
group is actively involved in research in the areas of distributed
debugging, network management, and program understanding. A recently
initiated project concerns the management of distributed applications
and systems. This project is a collaborative research and development
project, involving participants from several Canadian universities and
industrial partners. The major objectives of the research are:
- to identify and validate a management architecture supporting a
variety of management applications and accommodating existing and
ongoing work on network and system management,
- to develop solutions to problems in the design, modelling, and
  management of distributed applications,
- to identify the services required to support new management tools
and techniques, enable integration among different management com-
ponents, and to accommodate current approaches to network and systems
  management, and
- to develop an information model for the management services needed
to support a distributed management environment.

In particular, our research group is looking at two related problems.
We are developing diagnostic and analysis tools based on event capture
and replay, such as an event-based distributed debugger. The common
foundation of these tools is a visualization of the event streams ge-
nerated by distributed systems. Based on such visualizations, we are
searching for a general framework for event collection and reporting
that might be used for all management levels, utilizing process and
event abstraction.

The duties of the postdoctoral research associate include participating
in the collaboration to develop the basic results needed to solve the
above problems, design and implementation of prototype software, and
project co-ordination. In particular, it will be necessary to become
familiar with work taking place at other project locations and to help
co-ordinate the Waterloo activities with that other work.

Waterloo is located about 100 km.~west of Toronto. Both the Department
of Computer Science and the University as a whole enjoy an excellent
reputation. Further information can be obtained from the World-Wide Web:
URL http://www.uwaterloo.ca/home.html for the University, and
URL http://ccnga.uwaterloo.ca/ for the Shoshin research project.

Candidates should have a recent PhD and a strong background in computer
networks and distributed systems. Good computing skills are a must,
familiarity with C/C++, UNIX workstations, and LaTeX are desired.
The research group consists of four faculty members plus a varying
number of graduate students, so strong communication, organisational
and team working skills are essential. The position is available
immediately; current funding is available for three years.

Please send your curriculum vitae, including a thesis abstract, the names
of two references, a list of publications, and copies of at most two
relevant publications by February 1, 1995 to
