Hello,

We are two MIT graduate students trying to setup PVM on a combination of
machines
for radiation transport calculations. We have been struggling with the
Beta 2 version
of PVM3 for NT/Win32 for some time now. We have gotten PVM to run on
two Windows NT computers and a
Sun Sparcstation, but we have encountered some difficulties. We would
greatly
appreciate any comments, suggestions or advice. We thank you for your
time.

1. We cannot add additional computers to the virutal machine from
either of the
    Windows NT computers. Nor can we get the two Windows NT computers
to
    accept the password ('so=pw') command.

    When pvm is started on either one of the two NT machines, and we
attempt to
    add another machine, the following error is generated in a window:

	Dr. Watson for Windows NT

	An application error has occurred
		& an application error log is being generated

		Hoster.exe

	Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address 0x004024ea

2. However, from the Sun workstation, the two Windows NT computers can
be
    added to the virtual machine. But, tasks are spawned very
unreliablely,
    sometimes not appearing at all. For example,

pvm> ps -a
                    HOST      TID      FLAG COMMAND
pvm> conf
3 hosts, 2 data formats
                    HOST     DTID     ARCH   SPEED
                   john     40000     SUN4    1000
           rick.mit.edu     80000    WIN32    1000
             joe.mit.edu    c0000    WIN32    1000
pvm> spawn spmd -rick.mit.edu
1 successful
t80001
pvm> ps -a
                    HOST      TID      FLAG COMMAND
                 john       40002     0x4/c pvmgs
            rick.mit.edu    80001     0x4/c spmd.exe
pvm> spawn spmd -joe.mit.edu
0 successful
No such file
pvm>

3. It also appears that the commands spawn and add are not
   accepting the arguments "-xxx." For example,

pvm> add joe.mit.edu so=pw
0 successful
                    HOST     DTID
             joe.mit.edu Can't start pvmd
                   so=pw No such host
pvm>

We are using Winsock RSHD/NT Remote Shell Daemon for Windows NT 2.02
(from Denicomp Systems) and the Ataman Rexec Daemon (version 1.14)
and running Windows NT Workstation 3.51.

Our system environment settings are as follows:

	HOME=c:\
	PATH=%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;c:\pvm3\console\win32;
	     c:\pvm3\lib\win32;c:\mcnp\exe;c:\watcom\binnt;c:\watcom\binw;
	     c:\usr\local\bin;
	PVM_ARCH=Win32
	PVM_DPATH=c:\pvm3\lib\win32\pvmd3.exe
	PVM_ROOT=c:\pvm3
	PVM_RSH=c:\winnt35.0\system32
	PVM_TMP=c:\temp

Again, we would appreciate any comments. Please addres them either to
this newsgroup or directly to either wskiger@mit.edu or
jgoorley@mit.edu.

Sincerely,
Stead Kiger
