Really? With manual startup the master pvmd reads whatever you copy to 
the screen from the output of the slave daemon on another machine. The
segment of the code that prints out "pl_startup() ... EOF" would never
be executed in this case.

What you might want to do is to download pvm3.3.11 (you're using 3.3.7) 
from netlib.cs.utk.edu (under /pvm3) and install it in your HOME directory.
Set PVM_ROOT to $HOME/pvm3 and see if you still have the same problem.
If you're running AIX 4.1.x, versions of PVM prior to 3.3.11 cannot read 
the hostfile.
