A couple of naive suggestions :

1. Did you try adding hosts using IP addresses ?
2. What version of the Linux kernel do you use ?
3. Can you run PVM programs locally ?

[1] may pinpoint any network related problems while [2,3] might point you to
kernel related problems.

I use PVM 3.3.10 on Linux 1.2.13 (Redhat 2.1) and haven't had problems so
far. And, I have an 3C509 ethernet card on my PC. Further, I run PVM on a
very heterogeneous cluster -- Pentium PCs, SGIs and Alphas.
