Subject: Why does 'add host' fail??

I am trying to get pvm installed on a cluster of workstations running
Linux and although everything seems to have installed O.K. when I run
pvm and try to add a host I get a 'no such host' error even though I
can ping the host, telnet to it etc. I'm baffeled and don't even
know what to try next.

Here is how things are set up. I have one sever machine that has two
network cards - one that connects to the rest of the world and one
that connects to a local hub where host1-hostn are connected. The
server does not act as a gateway so nobody from outside can see
host1-hostn. I have put each hostname in a local /etc/hosts file
and I can ping, rsh, telnet, etc. from the server to host1-hostn
and from hostn to the server and each of the other hosts. So as
far as I can tell all the networking is configured properly.

All boxes are running Linux 1.99.7 (aka pre 2.0.7) and
PVM 3.3.10 The local hosts share a 100baseTX hub (all using
3COM 3c595 cards) and the outside network is connected to a
10baseT network (if, on the off chance, this matters one bit.)

Anybody have any ideas?????
