I am no experton this but I believe that there is a system configuraable
limit on the number of files that can be open at once. See your system
administrator - he should know.

As a side note. we have been running pvm 3.3.10 / SUNMP at Liverpool for a
while now and have found it to be unreliable. We are running HPF programs which
have been compiled to Fortran and PVM; there have been a number of situations
where the executables have hung. We have not had the same problems with
SUN4SOL2 nor with the SGI MP library.
