Announcement of PVM for the WIN32-bit platform

Unix and ... more:

A version of PVM software (pvm3.3.10) has been brought to the WIN32 platform.

Since this is a beta version, the source code has not yet been put
together with the existing PVM version but is fully compatible with
PVM3.

We are looking for beta testers who are interested in combining
machines running the WIN NT version with Unix workstations and/or MPP's
to one parallel virtual machine. The next step will include WIN95
machines. The source code and also the .lib's and .exe's are
distributed.

AVAILABILITY:
* Check out the pvm distribution at netlib:
    http://netlib2.cs.utk.edu/pvm3/index.html
  Files:
    pvm_win32.zip
    pvm_win32.tar.gz

REQUIREMENTS:
* We developed the package with MSVC ++ 4.00 and Fortran Powerstation
but it should be possible to link the libs with other companies'
  compilers

* You have to have a rexecd installed. we tried several rshds but
they did not follow the specification of piping stdout stderr back.

* There are some security implications when connecting NT machines to
  a network.

YOUR QUESTION:
* Why is this version for WIN NT ?
You can also use it for WIN 95, hence
-> We are currently developing a method for a convenient startup
for the WIN95 side (use the manual startup otherwise).
-> There is a problem for WIN95 when a spawned process likes to exit.

OUR QUESTION:
* We would like to know what you think about the WIN95 port.

RUNNING PVM on WIN32:
* make sure that
  PVM_ROOT and HOME are set
-> if you get the ms-dos comand prompt type in set to check for it
probably your computer needs a reboot.

Thanks,
Markus
