There are ranges of addresses specifically set aside for this purpose.
They are to be used only for internal networks, and will never be valid
addresses on the Internet.  What the exact ranges are, I'm not sure.  There
are class A, B, and C addresses.  Check at the IETF home page, or a FAQ
about TCP/IP or something.
