Only a liitle idea, but I had that problem because of it.

Did you compile the PVM sources with the -DSHAREDTMP option?. If you 
didn't, and your shared filesystem shares also the /tmp dir., the pvmd 
encounters a file called pvmd.ID, and crashes.

My error was "duplicate host", so maybe your problem is not this, but...
