The organizers of ICCDS are pleased with the interest in this conference as
shown by potential authors, and have given several some extra time in order
to accommodate the busy season of paper writing. As such, we think it is
only fair to let other authors know that there is still time to get material
in to us for consideration. Anything that is in our hands by 30 November is
going to be evaluated. So if you hesitated before ... now is the time to
jump in! We will be delighted to hear from you.

                        CALL FOR PAPERS

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CONFIGURABLE DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS

May 6-8 1996 in Annapolis, Maryland, USA

Sponsored by the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced
Computer Studies in cooperation with IEEE Computer Society TC on
Distributed Processing

The ICCDS emphasizes both innovative research and quantified experience in
configurable, distributed and parallel systems. The aim of this conference
is to explore on-line system configuration, at levels of abstraction
ranging from operating system kernels and communication protocols, to
operating-system services, to application-level program functionality. We
seek applications that require on-line configuration, in the distributed
and parallel domains, with configuration addressing the applications'
performance, reliability or timing behavior. We are interested in the
mechanisms required for capture of program state based on which
configuration decisions are made, as well as the mechanisms with which
configuration changes are carried out. We seek innovative research on
practical algorithms able to make on-line configuration decisions, as well
as research addressing the opportunities for and limitations of on-line
software configuration. We also encourage prospective authors to consider
the specification, design, management and maintenance aspects of
distributed configurable systems and software.

ICCDS evolved from two consecutive workshops on configurable distributed
systems. The aim of this conference is to broaden the topics addressed by
these workshops to include additional target platforms such as parallel
systems, as well as specific subsystems such as communication protocols and
operating systems, and new application domains such as real-time,
multimedia, and high performance computing applications. Topics of
interest include:

* Operating system, tool and language support for system configuration

* Specification and modelling of reconfigurable systems

* Instrumentation and visualization of configurable systems

* Configuration / reconfiguration methods and algorithms

* Configuration management and techniques for managing
   very large scale configurations

* Maintenance of configurable software and systems

* Quantified experiences with the on-line configuration of
applications in distributed, parallel, and real-time systems

* Performance criteria for system configuration and
concise characterizations of the configuration processes

We also invite submission of case studies, documenting substantial
experiences which can contribute to our community's understanding of
configurable systems. These papers should be identified as such by the
author, and will be reviewed based upon their potential for helping
communicate 'lessons learned'. In addition, the program committee is
considering the organization of panels, and 'Birds of a Feather' sessions,
and therefore, invites proposals concerning such topics from interested
parties.

A proceedings will be published in time to be available at the meeting and
will also be made available on the world wide web. In addition, based upon
feedback solicited at the meeting from attendees, the program committee
will select a subset of papers to be submitted as a special issue of a
suitable journal or as a book. (Papers selected from the previous meeting,
held in Pittsburgh (U.S), appeared in the November 1994 issue of the
Distributed Systems Engineering Journal).

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Five copies of the complete paper should be submitted to either of the two
program chairs. Papers must be written in English, and should be no more
than twenty pages (double spaced) in length, including figures. Because we
are interested in timely reports of research achievements, we will also
accept extended abstracts for consideration; these should be at least five
pages in length, and should clearly articulate the main points and results
which would appear in the full paper, should it be accepted. Electronic
submission of Postscript by email is acceptable with prior arrangement to
ensure compatibility of the medium. For additional information, for
European and international submissions, please contact:
