A while ago I heard that IBM has developed a version of MPI based directly on
the native communication system of the SP2. Thus it gives full speed and does
not need MPICH.

Frederic.

This is correct. IBM's version is called MPI-F. This is what we built
the PVM 3.3.8 SP-2 port on top of. In our tests PVM 3.3.8 is faster
than PVMe, but your mileage may vary.

If you do not have MPI-F installed you can still use PVM 3.3.8
with ARCH = RS6K. This version can still use the switch
   but only at TCP/IP speed.

Hope this clears up some of the mystery.
