As far as I know, the information in the /tmp/pvmd.xxx files is not the
master pvmd socket number. If it was, all the /tmp/pvmd.xxx files would
be identical.

From the PVM manual (10.3, The Programming Library):

"So that anonymous tasks can find it, the pvmd publishes the address
of the socket where it listens for connections in /tmp/pvmd.<uid>.
... spawned tasks inherit env var PVMSOCK, containing the same information."
