To address the need for high-level, portable parallel programming, the
High Performance Fortran (HPF) language was defined in 1992-1993. The
first commercial compilers for High Performance Fortran (HPF) have now
been announced, and more are expected shortly. In addition, research
groups have developed prototype implementations including advanced
optimization and user interface capabilities. It is therefore an
opportune time to consider the technologies required to make HPF
useable and efficient.

This special issue of Scientific Programming will include articles by
researchers and commercial implementors. The topics include, but are
not limited to:

	Optimization of HPF

	   Data placement
	   Work mapping
	   Storage management
           Communication optimization
	   Collective communication
           Runtime support
           I/O

	HPF related tools
	   Debugging
	   Performance estimation
	   Mapping visualization tools

	Library issues

Interfacing HPF with other languages and tools

In addition to research papers, Scientific Programming
publishes papers reporting experiences in the practice of
scientific programming and reviews of software. Material of
these types is also suitable for the special issue.
