I have the omnipresent "Can't start pvmd' message. Can anyone help?

Situation:
I have an NEC EWS 4800/230 (nec) and a Sun4 clone (newlogic) running 4.1.3.
pvm is 3.3.0. I have done my own port to the NEC, wherein might
well lie the problem.

I can start pvm on newlogic and add nec. All is OK
I can start pvm on nec but get the 'Can't start pvmd' message when I try
to add newlogic. Here are the /tmp/pvm* files.

   pvmd.102
/var/tmp/aaaa0004J (there is no line terminator)

   pvml.102
[t80040000] ready 3.3.0 Sat Dec 10 19:50:24 1994
[t80000000] pl_startup() pvmd@newlogic: EOF
[t80040000] startack() host newlogic expected version

What have I done to test the setup?
On the NEC,
1. rsh newlogic ls works fine.

2. rsh newlogic $PVM_ROOT/lib/pvmd
causes network activity, the NEC puts on its screen
/usr/tmp/aaaa00121 (obviously, the file part varies)
  and then nothing happens. But
/home/pvmuser/pvm3/bin/SUN4/pvmd3 IS running on newlogic, as is
  csh -c /home/pvmuser/pvm3/lib/pvmd, with a PID 1 less than pvmd3.
(If I but the rsh in the background I still Can't start pvmd3)

Does anyone have any hints?

Thank you in advance.
