Parallel Programming On Workstation Clusters

A Workshop Presented by the
Ohio Supercomputer Center

September 13-14, 1994

Workshop Schedule:

Tuesday, Sept. 13:	9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 14:	9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

HANDS - ON, QUALITY INSTRUCTION, LIMITED CLASS SIZE

Content:

Thousands of computers in industry are being under utilized because
the increased speed of desk top systems is more than most users doing
word processing or spread sheets require.

Most organizations use their desk tops from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the
remainder of the time they sit idle. Result -- 13 hours per day and 48
hours on the week-end of potential productivity with minimal
investment. Many commercial applications could utilize the parallel
paradigm to increase productivity.

Those off-hour cycles could be used for large batch jobs if the
applications are conducive to the parallel paradigm. Use of
workstation networks (clusters) as a parallel computing resource has
recently become popular due to RISC microprocessor speeds attaining
supercomputer levels and the introduction of more advanced LAN
technology.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) will conduct a workshop for the
general techniques of parallel software development and the specific
tools that utilize clusters.

During this two-day workshop, a combination of lectures, tutorials,
and hands-on problem solving will expose attendees to the following
skills:

-	identifying parallelism
-	data decomposition
-	debugging
-	performance optimization
-	simple and collective communication
-	process vs. processor-oriented machine models
-	PVM, MPI, and LAM message-passing libraries

Attendees will use the LAM (Local Area Multicomputer) cluster tools,
developed at OSC, to debug and execute parallel programs. Participants
can choose among the PVM, MPI, and LAM Application Programming
Interfaces (APIs) to write the programs.

A large portion of time will be allocated to hands-on implementation
sessions with individual support and consultation. A DEC AXP (Alpha)
workstation cluster will serve as the hardware platform for the
workshop.

The instructors are highly experienced developers of parallel systems
software and consultants for parallel application programmers.

Workshop Fee:
$600 includes hands-on instruction, handouts, meals
