I had the same problems, when I used a hostfile which set another
directory for the executables than the default.

It was something like

   picard  lo=schmitz dx=path_to_pvmd ep=/my/bin/directory

copying the pvmgs into /my/bin/directory or extending the ep-path to

    ep=/my/bin/directory:/dir/where/pvmgs/is

solved the problem.
