I'm developing a software package which needs to be able to start programs/
processes on other machines as various users. Crispin Cowan recently described
the difference between distributed systems and parallel systems. To use his
terminology, I'm looking for support for a distributed system.

We've been using PVM for prototyping this software, but it's no longer
acceptable to restrict ourselves to a single user per node. We need the
access protection (and other things) which would be provided by a distributed
system.

Does anyone have a suggestion for such a system? The system needs to have
many of the same characteristics of PVM, such as the ability work on
heterogeneous networks and the ability to dynamically add hosts to the network.

Thanks for any pointers you can provide.
