HeNCE (Heterogeneous Network Computing Environment) version 2.0 is
now available from netlib.

HeNCE 2.0 is a graphical parallel programming environment layered on
top of PVM 3.x. In HeNCE, the user creates a parallel program by
drawing and then annotating a picture that explicitly specifies a
parallel computation.

Compared to HeNCE 1.4, HeNCE 2.0 has a cleaner user interface, a
better integrated compilation system, and better use of the
capabilities of PVM 3.x to configure virtual machines and detect host
and task failures.

HeNCE 2.0 runs on UNIX systems that support the X Window System
(release 4 or later) and PVM 3.x. Currently it runs on Sun4/SunOS
4.1.3 (*not* Solaris 2.x), DEC Alpha, and RS/6000. (It also runs on
many other kinds of machines, but may not be thoroughly tested in such
environments.)

HeNCE 2.0 is available as follows:

* by anonymous ftp to ftp.netlib.org, directory "hence".

* by "anonymous rcp". To list the available files, type:

rsh netlib2.cs.utk.edu -l anon ls hence

To copy the HeNCE 2.0 documentation to your system, type:

  rcp anon@netlib2.cs.utk.edu:hence-2.0-doc.ps.z.uu .

  Finger anon@netlib2.cs.utk.edu for more info.

* from Mosaic or any other WWW browser, connect to
  http://www.netlib.org/hence.
(The HeNCE 2.0 user manual can also be browsed from a WWW client.)

* by the "netlib" email-based server. From UNIX, type

  echo help | mail netlib@ornl.gov

  to get help, and

echo send index from hence | mail netlib@ornl.gov

to get a list of files.

The following files are available:

readme general information file

hence-2.0-doc.ps.z.uu HeNCE User's Guide in PostScript format.
hence-2.0-src.tar.z.uu HeNCE 2.0 source code
hence-2.0-examples.tar.z.uu	Example programs. You probably want these.

Because so many users have reported difficulty compiling X windows
applications, HeNCE 2.0 is available pre-compiled for a few platforms.
These are available as:

hence-2.0-full.rs6k.tar.z.uu	HeNCE 2.0 pre-compiled for RS/6000.
hence-2.0-full.sun4.tar.z.uu	HeNCE 2.0 pre-compiled for Sun4 SunOS 4.1.3
hence-2.0-rtl.rs6k.tar.z.uu	HeNCE 2.0 run time library for RS/6000.
hence-2.0-rtl.sun4.tar.z.uu	HeNCE 2.0 run time library for Sun4 SunOS 4.1.3

Each of the pre-compiled packages requires PVM 3.3.

The "run time library" is for use on machines that supply computation
for HeNCE programs, but do not actually need to run the HeNCE
graphical interface ("htool") itself.

All of these files were compressed (with "compress") and uuencoded
before storing on the server. (The uuencoding is necessary so that
people can get them via the netilb email server).
