We found the problem to be kerberos (it would seem that kerberos hates any useful
Unix commands ... like rsh !).

A workaround is to:

i) 	Have users permanently entered in the local password files and ..
ii)	Use 'automount' for accessing user filestores, which will mount users files
	automatically when required, instead of the default which is to mount them
	if and only if the user logs onto the local machine.
