Problem: PVM 3.2.5 stalls _sometimes_ under AIX.

I have an ancient RS6000 320 with only 16Mbytes with AIX 3.2.3 and PVM 3.2.5.
If I run the fmaster/fslave (=master1/slave1) example program it works
fine for number of slaves(N) =1 or 2. But the machine stalls after announcing
the broadcasts _randomly_ for runs with N=3 or N=4, and almost
always with N>4 (but once straight after turning the 320 on it ran with N=31!).
There is 48Mbyte of paging space, which I could increase a lot if necessary.
(By stalls, I mean that the master and slaves just sit there and do not respond.
If I re-invoke pvm I cannot get to the > prompt. But I _can_ start
a new window.)
Similar behaviour occured with PVM 3.1.5.

Everything works fine on a Sun, also with 16Mbytes RAM and a lot smaller disk.
Everything works fine on a much bigger RS/6000 i.e. much more RAM and disk
 space.

Is this likely to be
 a) memory shortage problem
 b) swap space
 c) some horrid AIX system limit I can get around?

I would much appreciate clues or a solution.
