Please make sure that you 
1. Include every machine in the .rhosts file
2. Have the account with the same name on every machine.
  ( You can use the different account name too. But it require more setup in the host file )

For the halt command, I get the same responds as yours. So, it working don't worry.
(I use PVM 3.2.6 on 10 SPARC station 2 ).
