You've put your finger on something here.  Do you get the feeling, like
I do, that lots of people are publishing papers but very few people are
reading them?

The system of publish-or-perish to achieve academic tenure has reached a
dead end.  Nowadays, anyone who wants the latest, most up-to-date
information relies on PostScript email of prepublication material or
access to public-domain web sources.
