Dear readers,

We are currently designing a new system that we want to run MPI on.
(HP workstations with custom-designed fiber-optic links sitting on an
EISA bus.) Our hardware is in an early stage of design and it will not
be designed for production, but purely for research regarding the
fiber-optic system. (The reason for using MPI is only to show that we
can run something on top of the system.)

My question is as follows: On a device driver level, can MPI protocol
drivers talk to a generic device or do they require a network device?
(This is going to influence how our design resources are allocated.)
For that matter, has anyone out there done something related, i.e.,
written a device/protocol driver for ISA/EISA bus to run under MPI (Unix)?
Or does someone know about useful documentation that would help us to get
started?

Your help is greatly appreciated,

-Michael
