DISTRIBUTED HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING PROJECT

ACSys - Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Computational Systems
RDN - Cooperative Research Centre for Research Data Networks

Applications are invited to fill two positions in the Distributed High
Performance Computing (DHPC) Project, one in Adelaide and one in
Canberra.

The DHPC Project is investigating the use of Telstra's recently
commissioned Experimental Broadband Network (EBN) to connect high
performance computing platforms around Australia. We will evaluate the
network, processor and data storage issues that define the
effectiveness of such a configuration, and design and build innovative
distributed systems. The EBN is a high-speed ATM network linking major
cities; this project is the first of its kind in Australia and
involves many challenging research problems in distributed
computation.

DHPC is an RDN CRC project administered by ACSys and is co-located at
the University of Adelaide laboratories of the South Australian Centre
for Parallel Computing, and at the Australian National University in
Canberra. For information about the ACSys and RDN CRCs, and the
extensive facilities available to this project (including two
dedicated DEC Alpha high-performance clusters), see our Web page or
contact us as specified below.

For the Adelaide position, we are looking for someone able to provide
research and technical leadership. Depending on the ability and
qualifications of the successful applicant, we will appoint at one of
the following levels:

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW / RESEARCH FELLOW / FELLOW (Level A/Level B/Level
C) (Adelaide)
Ref: ACS 22.3.1

or

ANUO Grade 7 or 8 (IT/Programmer) (Adelaide)

Similarly, in Canberra we are looking for someone with well developed
technical skills and an ability to contribute to a research project:

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW / RESEARCH FELLOW (Level A/Level B) (Canberra)
Ref: ACS 22.3.2

or

ANUO Grade 5/6 or 7 (IT/Programmer) (Canberra)

Appointees will be expected to support DHPC projects, which involve
multi-disciplinary research in distributed high performance computing,
including an integrated national supercomputer environment, and
significant applications that utilise geographically dispersed high
performance computing and massive data storage resources.

Applicants should have the ability to work in: evaluation of
distribution technologies, data storage across diverse mechanisms,
massive data transfers, high level protocols, issues of latency,
reliability and utilisation, and wide area distributed network
programming. As DHPC is developing collaborations in the field of GIS
(Geographic Information Systems), applicants with GIS interests are
encouraged.

An appointee as Fellow or Research Fellow would be expected to provide
research leadership and have a research record appropriate to the
position. An appointee at a senior technical level will be expected to
provide strong technical leadership, plan and develop software
projects, and be able to support the research activities of the
project.
