EXPERIENCED -- PARALLEL I/O -- SYSTEMS SOFTWARE ENGINEER

MRJ, Inc. has an immediate opening for an experienced systems
software engineer specializing in parallel I/O to join the Parallel
Systems group and support the Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation (NAS)
facility at NASA Ames Research Center. NAS is an open,
research-oriented facility committed to meeting the twin goals of
providing supercomputer resources to computational researchers and
pushing forward the envelope of scientific computing.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Develop and implement the portable reference implementation of
  MPI-IO as part of a world-wide team.

  Specific areas:

	*  MPI-IO standardization effort
	* Development of reference implementation of MPI-IO
	*  Parallel I/O benchmarking
	* Evaluating and tuning existing parallel file systems
	* Potentially designing and deploying a new parallel file system

Although we are specifically targeting someone who will fit the
parallel I/O position, it is expected that a qualified candidate
will have broader skills. In general, members of the parallel
  systems group:

  	* Evaluate various aspects of highly parallel systems
(performance, job scheduling, high speed networking,
	   I/O throughput, scientific libraries, etc.),
	* Work closely with system administrators, support staff
and users to identify problems and develop necessary systems
software to make NAS systems more productive and usable,
	* Collaborate with computer vendors to integrate these
	   improvements into vendor products,
	* Develop benchmarks for use in procuring future highly
           parallel systems, and
	* Publish and present insights and results, both internally,
	   and throughout the country.

Emphasis is on implementing workable solutions in a timely manner to
provide the most productive and useful parallel computing environment
  in the world.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  * 2+ years experience with highly parallel computing systems
  * 2+ years UNIX programming experience --- expert in C
  * Experience with MPI and at least one parallel file system.
  * Exemplary communication skills demonstrated by a track record
     of publications and presentations.
  * M.S. or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering,
     or related discipline
  * Excellent problem-solving abilities, and a proven ability to work
     both independently and collaboratively.

HELPFUL EXPERIENCE:

  Languages:		C, Fortran 77, Fortran 90, C++, HPF
Machines: IBM SP-2, SGI POWER/Challenge, Intel Paragon,
			Cray J90, Cray C90, Cray T3D, Meiko CS-2,
PC clusters, and supercomputers, MPPs, and
			workstations from other vendors.
Operating Systems:	UNIX, AIX, IRIX, OSF/1 AD, other distributed systems
Networking: TCP/IP, DCE/DFS, HIPPI, ATM, FDDI, SCI
Math: Applied Physics or Mathematics, Computational
Aerospace, familiarity with Large Scale Scientific
			Computation

ABOUT MRJ, Inc.

As an MRJ employee at NAS you will have access to state of the art
supercomputer and workstation hardware and software. The NAS
facility currently supports a networked (HIPPI, ATM, FDDI, Ethernet)
heterogeneous UNIX environment that consists of two Cray C90s, a
  160-node IBM SP2, a 44-processor SGI POWER/Challenge XL array, a large
(over 24 terabyte) mass storage system, a cluster of four Cray J90s,
and over 200 high performance workstations. Additional systems are
  scheduled for delivery.

Located at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California,
NAS is an international leader in large scale scientific computing,
providing vector and parallel supercomputer resources for
computational science researchers in industry, government, and
academia. In addition to providing cycles, NAS is committed to
path finding in scientific computing by aggressively pursuing state of
the art technology, from supercomputers to very high speed networks
to high performance workstations for visualization of scientific data.

NAS is currently listed as the world's eighteenth most powerful
computing site [See Gunter Ahrendt's rankings in comp.sys.super], but
unlike the majority of supercomputer sites has the advantage of being
an unclassified facility with an open, research oriented environment.

The NAS environment encourages continuing education and intellectual
growth, including writing, publishing, and presenting technical papers.

MRJ provides a comprehensive benefits package.

MRJ is an EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.
