Announcing EPIC: EPCC Interactive Courseware
============================================

EPIC is an interactive teaching environment, using WWW to deliver
courseware and exercises via a standard Web browser. The courseware
consists of HTML student notes and a set of exercises which can be
attempted interactively from the browser.

At present we have implemented two of our courses: "Writing Message
Passing Programs with MPI" and "Writing Data-Parallel Codes with
HPF". As EPIC uses a client-server model to deliver the courseware it
is necessary to have MPI ((CHIMP)MPI implementation) and HPF (Portland
Group HPF compiler) installed on your system (all compilation and
execution takes place on the client machine). In future releases we
will support other implmentations of MPI/HPF (please let us know if
you would like a particular implementation supported).

To use EPIC to follow either of these courses you should consult the
following Web site:

                http://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/epic/

This contains installation instructions and the courseware itself. We
have tested the package on Sun 4, Solaris and SGI machines and are
interested in trying it on a wider range of platforms (we assume a
UNIX system with xterm and Perl installed). If you have any problems
with EPIC or are interested in more information/authoring your own
EPIC course please do not hesitate to contact us (central email at
epcc-tec@epcc.ed.ac.uk).

I hope you find this interesting and look forward to hearing your
comments,

Best wishes,
