Employment-Opportunity at Stuttgart University, F.R.G.
-------------------------------------------------------------

At the Computing-Center of Stuttgart University (RUS)
two positions for research-scientists with the topics

============================================================
1. Dynamic data-structures for the numerical solution of PDEs
2. Load-Balancing for unstructured and adaptive grids
============================================================

have to be occupied.
Duration of the project: approx. 2 years (January/April 1996 - December 1997)
Payment is according to the German federal employment tarifs (BAT) level IIa

Descripition of the project:
Together with several partners from academia and industry, a parallel code
for reacting flows will be extended from stationary
geometries to adapting geometries as they appear in combustion-engines with
moving pistons.
At RUS a programming model called DDD (Dynamic Distributed Data) has ben
developed to facilitate the data-distributing in dynamic problems on
distributed-memory machines. The task in the first position is the further
development of DDD and its integration into the existing parallel reacting
flow code.
For such adaptive computations, dynamic load-balancing is an essential topic.
DDD today works with several centralized balancing schemes. To achieve the
goals of the project, it is however desirable to switch to distributed schemes
in order to avoid sequential bottlenecks. The task in the second position is
therefore the selection, optimisation and implementaion of an appropriate
load-balancing-scheme into the simulation-system.

Required programming-languages: C, FORTRAN77, (C++, FORTRAN90)
Programming-models: MPI, remote copy, (PVM, PARMACS)
Hardware-platforms: Cray T3D/T3E, Intel Paragon, NEC SX-4, meiko CS-2, IBM SP/2
Job-profile: Numerics, Parallel Computing, (CFD, Combustion)
Required university-degree: Computer-Science, Mathematics, Engineering or
Physics

The possibility to achieve a PhD-degree during the project is given.
The position is temporary for the project.

Applications should be sent to
