			 Funded by JISC NTSC
		 Hosted at HENSA Unix (JISC funded)

		    Admininistrative information

		<URL:http://www.hensa.ac.uk/parallel/>
	      <URL:ftp://unix.hensa.ac.uk/pub/parallel/>

This archive contains freely distributable software and documents, in
the High Performance and Parallel Computing subject area with special
interest in the Transputer processor concept and the occam language.

There are currently over 440M of files available.

Please consult the accompanying article for details of new files and
services.

There are THREE full public mirror sites of the archive with
anonymous ftp access:

WORK IN PROGRESS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Better search database
* Better keywords for files, using IAFA Templates.
* FORM based customised WWW interface created on-the-fly.
STATISTICS
~~~~~~~~~~
All of these were generated with the Combined Log Tools package written by
me. Available from <URL:http://www.hensa.ac.uk/tools/www/logtools/>.

Total (From 7th May 1993 - 16th Nov 1995)
=====

* Bytes transmitted and accesses (aka `hits'):

  Type       ||            bytes   %bytes  |  Accesses   %Acc.
  ------------------------------------------------------------
  ftp        ||   20,797,396,801    76.44  |   352,011   41.42
  WWW        ||    5,131,199,340    18.86  |   378,299   44.52
  gopher     ||    1,148,814,518     4.22  |   116,490   13.71
  email      ||      131,182,802     0.48  |     2,949    0.35
  interactive||          169,450     0.00  |        22    0.00
  ------------------------------------------------------------
  total      ||   27,208,762,911   100.00  |   849,771  100.00

  That byte total is 25948 Mbytes or 25 Gbytes sent which is ~59
  times the current size of the archive. The accesses are getting
  close to the 1,000,000 mark; at the current rate it will be a
  little over 2 months from now.

October 1995
============

* Users: 432 named users (plus anonymous ones via WWW)
         365 last month

* Bytes transmitted and accesses:

  Type       ||            bytes   %bytes  |  Accesses   %Acc.
  ------------------------------------------------------------
  ftp        ||      843,560,812    56.84  |    15,635   25.47
  WWW        ||      625,314,388    42.13  |    42,889   69.88
  gopher     ||       15,233,159     1.03  |     2,855    4.65
  ------------------------------------------------------------
  total      ||    1,484,108,359   100.00  |    61,379  100.00

  There was a big increase in gopher traffic due to a couple of
  gopher tree web crawlers.

WHERE IS IT?
~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the HENSA (Higher Education National Software Archive) UNIX
archive.  The HENSA UNIX archive is accessible via the World Wide Web
(WWW), ftp, gopher, email and interactively.  For details, see below.
HOW DO I FIND WHAT I WANT?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The files are all located in /pub/parallel and each directory contains a
short Index file of the contents.

If you want to check what has changed in between USENET postings, look
at the /pub/parallel/Changes file which contains the new files added.

There is also a full text index available of all the files in
/pub/parallel/info/FullIndex.ascii but be warned - it is very large
(over 840K). Compressed and gzipped versions are in the same
directory.

For those UNIX dweebs, there are output files of ls-lR (1.3M) in
/pub/parallel/info/ls-lR along with compressed and gzipped versions
too.

HOW DO I CONTACT IT?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are several ways to access the files which are described below
- use the WWW, gopher, log in to the archive to browse files and
retrieve them by email or transfer files by FTP over the Internet / JIPS.
WWW Access
~~~~~~~~~~

Connect your WWW browser program (e.g. NCSA Mosaic, Netscape
Navigator, Lynx, ...) to the WWW server via:

	<URL:http://www.hensa.ac.uk/parallel/>

OR if you want reference me in your WWW tree, please use the following bit
of HTML:

<A HREF="http://www.hensa.ac.uk/parallel/">Internet Parallel Computing Archive</A>.

Transferring files by FTP from JIPS/the Internet
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
	site: unix.hensa.ac.uk
	directory: /pub/parallel
        login: anonymous
        password: <your email address>
Use the 'get' command to transfer a file from the remote machine to
the local one.  When transferring a binary file it is important to
give the command 'binary' before initiating the transfer.  For more
details of the 'ftp' command, see the manual page by typing 'man ftp'.
Browsing and transferring by gopher
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Starting from the Root Minnesota Gopher gopher, follow the menu entries:

	Other Gopher and Information Servers
	Europe
	United Kingdom
	HENSA unix (National software archive, University of Kent), (UK)
	Internet Parallel Computing Archive

OR go straight to the gopher server at unix.hensa.ac.uk.

	unix% gopher -p 1/.archive/parallel unix.hensa.ac.uk
OR
	<URL:gopher://unix.hensa.ac.uk/11/.archive/parallel>
	(but why not use the WWW interface?)

The short descriptions are abbreviated to fit on an 80 column display
but the long ones can always be found under 'General Information.' (the
Index files). Updates to the gopher tree follow a little behind the
regular updates.

Transferring files by Email
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To obtain a specific file email a message to
      ftpmail@unix.hensa.ac.uk
containing the single line
      help
for full instructions.
Logging in from the Internet or SuperJANET
------------------------------------------
	telnet unix.hensa.ac.uk
Once connected, use the login name 'archive' and your email address to
enter. You will then be placed inside the fbr restricted shell. Use the
help command for up to date details of what commands are available.
DONATIONS
~~~~~~~~~
Donations are very welcome. We do not allow uploading of files directly
but if you have something you want to donate, please contact me.
