%X As part of the CoSMoS project, we have implemented a variety
of
complex systems simulations using occam\-pi. occam\-pi is
unusual in
that it provides built\-in support for
synchronisation against a
real\-time clock, but simulations
generally need to run faster or
slower than real time. We
describe the idea of a \[dq]clock\[dq] \-\- a
new
synchronisation primitive for process\-oriented
programming, similar to
a barrier but extended with a sense
of time. Clocks can be used to
provide simulated time in a
complex systems simulation, and can also
be used to
implement efficient phase synchronisation for
controlling
access to shared resources.
